Wine description for Gutedel Kalk und Löss 2023 by Weingut am Klotz

Character
A slender, bright white wine with just 11% abv, capturing the uncomplicated drinking pleasure of the Markgräflerland in a bottle. The crisp apple and citrus fruit is underpinned by a cool, limestone-driven minerality that lends the wine structure and length. Dry, fresh and endowed with lively acidity, this is an everyday wine that nevertheless remains true to its origins.
Terroir & Origin
The Isteiner Klotz in the Markgräflerland, a region in south-western Baden, is a geological rarity: here one finds Jurassic limestone, a rock formation that is extremely uncommon in Germany and otherwise occurs mainly in the Jura and Burgundy. This bedrock, complemented by loess, imbues the wine with a pronounced minerality and depth. Weingut am Klotz, in the hands of the Reinecker and Keller families since 2018/2019, farms its vines organically and relies on hand-harvesting and minimal intervention in the cellar to preserve the authenticity of this unique terroir.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Gutedel, also known as Chasselas, is the traditional grape variety of the Markgräflerland and receives a distinctive interpretation at the Isteiner Klotz. The grapes are carefully harvested and sorted by hand; in the cellar, the principle of minimal intervention prevails, allowing the natural character of the fruit and terroir to unfold fully. The result is a wine that combines the varietal freshness and finesse typical of Gutedel with an unusual, limestone-influenced structure.
Food Pairings
The lively acidity and moderate alcohol level make this Gutedel a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with asparagus with hollandaise sauce, pan-fried pike-perch or light summer salads. It also comes into its own alongside young, mild cheeses or as an aperitif.
