Wine Description for Grauburgunder 2024 by Klaus Vorgrimmler

Colour & Appearance
Pale, slightly cloudy golden yellow – an unadorned, natural wine that reveals its authenticity right in the glass.
Nose
Here Grauburgunder shows its most characterful side: quince and apple meet orange and walnut, underpinned by a fascinating herbal note of ivy and damp leaves. A spicy-smoky component lends additional depth to the bouquet. This is Grauburgunder beyond the usual Baden opulence – instead, finesse, elegance and refreshing complexity.
Palate
Juicy and lively, the wine flows across the tongue with remarkable smoothness and beguiling freshness, which effortlessly integrates the 13% alcohol. The yeasty notes – presumably from ageing on fine lees – give the wine structure and substance without weighing it down. A balance one would wish to see more often in Baden Grauburgunders.
Finish
Medium to long, with sustained freshness and a fine aftertaste of citrus fruits and mineral salt.
Terroir & Origin
The Tuniberg is a geological peculiarity – a fault block of Jurassic limestone that remained when the Upper Rhine Graben formed. Above the limestone lies glacial loess, though in the steeper southern section only thinly, allowing the vines to root directly in the Jurassic limestone. This combination of calcareous subsoil and loess-loam shapes the mineral, yet fruit-forward character of this wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder), evidently aged on yeast lees, which gives the wine its creamy texture and additional complexity. The slight cloudiness indicates minimal filtration – a bold, artisanally honest approach.
Food Pairing Suggestions
An excellent food companion: veal brisket, poultry in cream sauce, porcini risotto, grilled monkfish or mature Comté. Its structure and freshness make it versatile.
Special Features
A Grauburgunder with character – distinctive, precise, with edges and angles. Klaus Vorgrimmler proves that Baden can do more than pleasing fruit bombs.
