Wine Description for Grauburgunder 2024 by Klaus Vorgrimmler

Colour & Appearance
Pale, slightly hazy golden yellow – a wine that makes no secret of its natural winemaking approach.
Nose
Here Grauburgunder reveals its characterful side: quince and apple meet orange and walnut, underpinned by a fascinating herbal component of ivy and leaf. The spicy, smoky note lends the wine remarkable depth. This is Grauburgunder beyond the usual Baden heaviness – pure finesse and elegance.
Palate
Juicy and lively on the palate, with that creamy texture one hopes for from a good Pinot Gris. The intoxicating freshness is cleverly structured by yeasty notes, giving the wine substance and texture without weighing it down. A perfect balance between fruit, structure and drinkability.
Finish
Persistent and fresh, with a fine spiciness that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
Hailing from the Tuniberg in Baden, this Grauburgunder benefits from a geological peculiarity: the vines are rooted here in a fault block of Jurassic limestone, covered with glacial loess. In the steeper southern section, the roots reach down into the limestone itself – a minerality that is distinctly perceptible in the wine. This geology is otherwise found only again at the Swiss border.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Classic Pinot Gris, evidently aged on yeast lees – a technique that gives the wine structure, complexity and that creamy texture that makes it an ideal food companion.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine that calls for the dinner table: perfect with roasted poultry, veal schnitzel with mushroom cream sauce, autumn vegetable risotto or aged Comté. Also an exciting choice with Asian dishes featuring nut and sesame aromas.
Special Features
This Grauburgunder impressively demonstrates that Baden can do more than opulent, broad wines. Klaus Vorgrimmler delivers here a characterful, distinctive style – exactly the kind of Grauburgunder one wishes to see more of.
