Wine description for Spätburgunder 2023 by Klaus Vorgrimmler
- Character
- A powerful yet finely structured Spätburgunder with ripe fruit, delicate spice and a remarkable minerality that speaks of the biodynamically tended soils. Vinified dry, with 13.0% alcohol – a wine of both substance and elegance.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vines grow on the sun-drenched southern tip of the Tuniberg near Freiburg in Baden. The fertile loess soil retains warmth and lends the wines power and finesse. Klaus and Maj Britt Vorgrimmler cultivate just 3.2 hectares here – quality over quantity. As a demonstration estate of the Federal Ministry, they show how ecological diversity enriches both wine and environment.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) dominates 65 per cent of the estate’s vineyard area. Organic since 1985 and biodynamic since 2006 – the Vorgrimmlers are among the pioneers of this movement in Baden. Work follows the Maria Thun lunar calendar; alfalfa, buckwheat and clover enhance soil life. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with wild yeasts from their own vineyards – with open-top fermentation on the skins for the red wines.
- Food Pairings
- A versatile food companion: with roast duck, beef fillet, rack of lamb or mushroom dishes such as porcini risotto. Also a delight with mature hard cheese or a simple Coq au Vin.
