Wine Description for Vindemiatrix VdF 2022 by Georg Meissner

Colour & Appearance
Lightly transparent purple, which already announces the elegance and finesse of this ancient Carignan vineyard site in the glass.
Nose
An archetypal Carignan of remarkable aromatic intensity. At its heart stands sour cherry liqueur – concentrated, almost syrup-like in density. This is joined by mulberries and blackberries, underpinned by black olive tapenade, bresaola, yeast notes and the typical garrigue of Roussillon. Crushed dark stone lends the bouquet a mineral depth.
Palate
Surprisingly fresh and juicy – the fruit shows itself even crisper than expected. Cherry fruit, vibrant acidity and a gripping tannin are masterfully woven together, appearing clear and precise. The finely polished texture proves: this is how Carignan should taste. Remarkable balance between density and drinkability.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from a Carignan vineyard planted in 1899 in Roussillon – a true rarity. The vines stand on a terrace, surrounded by stone walls, rock and forest. Extreme yields of only 9 hl/ha guarantee maximum concentration. Georg Meissner has rescued these parcels, originally destined for grubbing up, and manages them with great dedication.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Carignan from vines over 120 years old. The name Vindemiatrix refers to the star Epsilon Virginis, whose appearance signalled to the Romans the beginning of the harvest – a poetic reference to the ancient winemaking tradition of this region.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with grilled lamb racks, beef steak with herb butter, wild boar terrine or Mediterranean braised dishes. Also excellent with air-dried ham, chorizo and aged Manchego.
Special Features
A wine of historical significance: the vines over 120 years old rank among France’s oldest Carignan stocks. An authentic piece of wine history that impressively documents Meissner’s rescue mission and craftsmanship.
