Wine Description for Vindemiatrix VdF 2021 by Georg Meissner
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous ruby red with garnet reflections, medium intensity. The wine displays the typical transparency of old Carignan vines – clear and brilliant in the glass.
- Nose
- Expressive and precise: redcurrants, sour cherry and raspberry dominate, underpinned by Mediterranean herbs – thyme and rosemary. Fine mineral notes, a hint of slate and garrigue. The nose remains cool and vibrant, remarkably restrained despite its southern origins.
- Palate
- Lean and electrifying at a moderate 12.5% alcohol. The acidity carries the wine with elegance, the tannins are fine-grained and perfectly integrated. Red fruits in the foreground, behind them a saline minerality and herbal complexity. Nothing overloaded, no jam – instead precision, tension and drinkability. A Carignan that demonstrates what this underestimated grape variety can achieve when treated with respect.
- Finish
- Medium to long, fresh and juicy. The fruit fades slowly, accompanied by fine spice and a mineral echo. Moreish – one immediately wants to pour another glass.
- Terroir & Origin
- From over 100-year-old Carignan vines in Roussillon, which Georg Meißner rescued from grubbing up. These historic parcels produce wines of exceptional depth and character – a living testament to the viticultural history of southern France.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Carignan, biodynamically farmed. The grapes are hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented. Maturation takes place without fining or filtration, with minimal intervention. The collaboration with Flo Busch guarantees precise cellar technique whilst maintaining maximum respect for the fruit.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Excellent with grilled vegetables, ratatouille, lamb chops with herb crust, entrecôte or Mediterranean stews. Also a delight with hard cheeses such as Manchego.
- Special Features
- A passion project of the renowned biodynamic researcher Dr Georg Meissner. The wine embodies the renaissance of Carignan and proves that Roussillon is capable of far more than heavy, high-alcohol red wines.
