Wine Description for Serrat de la Plane VdF 2022 by Georg Meissner

Colour & Appearance
Quite transparent purple with remarkable clarity – a wine that reveals its provenance from old vines and sparse soils visually from the outset.
Nose
Fascinatingly multi-layered: blackberries, blueberries, mulberries and cherries display ripe fruit with crisp freshness. Beneath this, cool mineral notes of graphite and wet stone, complemented by crushed nutshells, garrigue, undergrowth and dry leaves. A Grenache that holds ripeness and coolness in perfect balance.
Palate
The dark fruit continues on the palate, yet remains concentrated and precise – a sweet core, no larger than a pea. The wine otherwise feels completely dry, with powdery tannins, brilliant acidity and a juicy, austere presence. Power and grace in a glass, carried by impressive clarity.
Finish
Long, austere and mineral with lingering stone fruit and granite notes. The freshness persists right through to the end.
Terroir & Origin
Serrat de la Plane – Catalan for „stony plateau“ – aptly describes this extreme vineyard site in Roussillon. The old Grenache vineyard stands on dry, stony gneiss weathered soil, wind-exposed and with minimal yields of just 9 hl/ha. Georg Meissner has rescued these parcels, originally earmarked for grubbing up, and manages them with great dedication.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Grenache from old vines that struggle for every drop of water on extreme terroir. The result: concentrated, yet never heavy wines with extraordinary precision.
Food Pairing Suggestions
With braised game birds, lamb shoulder with Provençal herbs, beef fillet with porcini mushrooms or aged Manchego. The wine has sufficient structure for robust meat dishes, yet remains elegant enough for more refined preparations.
Special Features
A prime example of the new generation Roussillon: Grenache with depth rather than bombast, precision rather than power at all costs. The perfect yin and yang of transparency and density makes this wine exceptional.
