Wine Description for Gamlitz Sauvignon Blanc Late Release DAC 2021 from Sattlerhof
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale straw yellow with brilliant clarity – a wine that counters its three years of maturation in tank with visual freshness.
- Nose
- This Sauvignon Blanc presents itself deliberately on the green fruit side of the variety. Sugar snap peas and green asparagus dominate, accompanied by lime juice and zest. These are joined by green pear, apple and a herbal freshness. Mineral notes of wet stone with lichen lend complexity, whilst subtle hints of pineapple and carambola add exotic accents.
- Palate
- On the palate, the green fruit precision continues: peas, limes and stone fruit meet white and green berries. A slight extract sweetness balances the juicy, mouth-watering acidity perfectly. The wine displays a lightly saline minerality that gives it drinking flow and depth. The length impresses – here the extended maturation has left its mark without sacrificing youthful freshness.
- Finish
- Fresh and persistent with a citrus-driven minerality that lingers long on the palate. The saline note carries through to the end.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vines for this DAC wine are rooted in steep slopes between 350 and 450 metres altitude around Gamlitz. Soil composed of crystalline quartz sands with mica and the cool microclimate of South Styria shape the character sustainably. The 15 to 35-year-old vineyard plantings deliver concentrated yet elegant fruit.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Selectively hand-harvested Sauvignon Blanc, spontaneously fermented and matured for three years in stainless steel tank – considerably longer than usual. This late release demonstrates how well the variety can age on South Styria’s crystalline soils whilst retaining its characteristic freshness.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Perfect with green asparagus with Hollandaise sauce, goat’s cheese, sushi and sashimi, scallops or a salad with avocado and grapefruit. Also an excellent choice with pan-fried char or herb risotto.
- Special Features
- The three-year maturation before bottling makes this wine a late release – a bold statement from Sattlerhof that proves: Styrian Sauvignon Blanc can age and gain in complexity whilst retaining its vibrancy.
