Wine description for Tenuta Fraune Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC 2015 by Fidora
- Colour & appearance
- Bright ruby red with distinct mahogany highlights towards the rim – a wine that visibly displays its maturity.
- Nose
- Beautifully evolved and captivating: plums, lingonberries, dried figs and raisins form the fruity foundation. Overlaid are notes of cedarwood, cinnamon, wood smoke and milk chocolate – an aromatic profile reminiscent of a late autumn evening by the fireside.
- Palate
- Fine fruit sweetness meets beautifully ripe tannins and a refreshing acidity. The texture is supple, almost velvety, without losing any tension. A wine that seeks out food pairings with fruity, spicy and savoury influences.
- Finish
- Long and warming, with lingering notes of dried fruits and a delicate spice that marks the palate for minutes afterwards.
- Terroir & origin
- The vines grow on limestone at 220 to 300 metres above sea level on the hills of Illasi, in the eastern part of Valpolicella. The Fraune estate lies in the classic valley of Fumane, just a few kilometres from the calcareous slopes of the Marano Valley – an area renowned for structured, long-lived red wines.
- Grape varieties & vinification
- 65% Corvina, 25% Corvinone and 10% Rondinella – the classic trio of Valpolicella. The grapes come from biodynamic farming; Fidora has been Demeter-certified since 2020 and works according to the principles of Rudolf Steiner. Vinification is gentle, and maturation in large vessels gives the wine its silky texture.
- Food recommendations
- Parsnip gnocchi with spiced plum sauce and bacon – the wine’s fruity sweetness mirrors the plums, while its acidity balances the bacon. Quail on lentils with balsamic onions – the wine’s spice embraces the poultry, and the tannins provide structure to the lentils. Pecorino with pickled figs and walnuts – the dried fruit notes in the wine find their perfect match here.
- Special features
- This Valpolicella Classico Superiore comes from one of the oldest organic estates in Veneto. Guido Fidora stopped using pesticides as early as 1974 – decades before it became a trend. Today, his grandson Emilio continues the work, preparing every biodynamic preparation himself. A third of the 160 hectares is deliberately left wild: forests, ponds, and pastures for cattle and horses. The result is a wine of unusual clarity and depth that makes its origin palpable in every sip.
