Wine description for Duemani Costa Toscana IGP 2019 3000ml Doppel-Magnum by Duemani
- Colour & appearance
- Deep, luminous cherry red with violet reflections — a robe that promises density even before the glass is given its first swirl.
- Nose
- A Cabernet Franc of rarely achieved polyphony: cinnamon plums, damsons and mulberries meet fig and blackberry, whilst dark blossoms — hibiscus, violet, mallow — provide a floral counterpoint. Beneath lies a fascinatingly earthy layer of beetroot, artichoke and braised pepper, accompanied by sage, marjoram, a hint of cedarwood, mocha and melted dark chocolate. An aromatic profile that continually rearranges itself over hours.
- Palate
- Remarkably compact and densely woven, with bold fruit that surges forward powerfully and an acidity that kicks in immediately, keeping everything in tension. The tannins are at perfect ripeness — elegant, melting, almost tender despite the power behind them. The vegetal notes, particularly tomato and beetroot, lend depth and prevent any sweetish invitation to mere indulgence. This is a wine that demands attention — and rewards it.
- Finish
- Long and persistent, marked by dark chocolate and coffee, which make their presence clearly felt even minutes later. A finale that does not fade away but resonates.
- Terroir & origin
- The vineyards near Riparbella lie at 220 to 250 metres above sea level, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, eight kilometres from the Tuscan coast. The soils are calcareous, rich in clay and pebbles — a subsoil that gives this Cabernet Franc the mineral tautness that sets it apart from mere fruitiness. In 2019, the vines were in their 17th year.
- Grape variety & vinification
- 100% Cabernet Franc, hand-harvested at the end of September, double-sorted — first in the vineyard, then on the sorting table. Spontaneously fermented in temperature-controlled conical oak vats, with 30 days of maceration and short, regular pump-overs. Subsequently aged for 22 months in small French barriques (80% new, 20% second use), bottled unfiltered. The estate has been Demeter-certified since 2004 and works uncompromisingly according to biodynamic principles.
- Food recommendations
- The double magnum calls for a table, not just a moment: venison loin with a nut crust, Romanesco and fried potato dumplings brings the requisite spice and earthiness. Pink-roasted duck breast with hoisin sauce, pak choi and braised plum mirrors the dark fruit and the sweet-spicy depth. For vegetable lovers: crispy fried aubergine with garlic, mint and black olives — here the wine’s Mediterranean herbal spiciness finds its echo.
- Special features
- Luca D’Attoma, the man behind Redigaffi and Messorio, has set his own benchmark with Duemani — and this Cabernet Franc is not dubbed a “Cheval Blanc killer” for nothing. The 3000 ml double magnum is more than just a format: it promises slower, more even maturation and turns every occasion into an event. With an annual production of only 45,000 bottles, Duemani remains a boutique winery focused on individuality — and this 2019 vintage shows why that approach works so well.
