Wine Description for Condrieu „Le Tinal“ AOC 2022 500ml from Maison Stephan
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous lemon yellow with golden reflections and a fine, vibrant perlage that signals freshness and vitality.
- Nose
- A beguiling, highly complex aromatic spectrum that showcases the Viognier grape in all its glory. Initially dominated by tropical notes of mango, grilled pineapple and passion fruit, followed by grapefruit, blood orange and lychee. Preserved peach and ripe pear combine with floral accents of acacia blossom and almond blossom. Subtle sweetness from maple syrup and date lends depth, whilst candied ginger and citrus zest provide freshness. Herbal notes of thyme, lemon balm and coriander seed, along with vegetal hints of fennel and artichoke, round off the multi-layered bouquet.
- Palate
- Here Le Tinal reveals an unconventional side: instead of the typical opulence of many Condrieu, this wine presents itself as taut, lean and precise. The lush fruit is held in a tight corset, allowing the fine acid peaks to shine brilliantly and creating tremendous drinkability. The herbal and ethereal aromas dominate on the palate, the structure is vibrant and invigorating. A Condrieu that expresses its origins without resorting to the usual clichés.
- Terroir & Origin
- The wine comes from a tiny 0.17-hectare parcel in the commune of Verin. The terroir is characterised by magnesium iron mica and granite, which lend the wine its mineral precision. The 35-year-old vines from sélection massale yield a modest 35 hl/ha.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Viognier doré. Maison Stephan practises rigorous low-intervention winemaking without additives, pesticides or filtration, virtually sulphur-free. After cold maceration and pressing under carbon dioxide pressure, vinification takes place at 20°C in used barrels. The twelve-month maturation occurs in small oak casks from Tronçais, the Alps and the Caucasus.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Pan-fried John Dory with saffron jus and clams, seared prawns with orange butter or saffron risotto with orange zest. The taut structure harmonises perfectly with delicate seafood and aromatic vegetable dishes.
- Special Features
- A radically distinctive Condrieu that breaks with the opulent tradition and instead focuses on finesse, minerality and drinkability. Natural vinification meets terroir expression – a wine for lovers of purist, vibrant white wines.
