Viognier

Viognier grape – Historical watercolour from Viala & Vermorel Ampélographie (1901)

Viognier nearly disappeared. In the 1960s, barely 14 hectares remained, almost all in Condrieu. Today the variety is planted worldwide – yet truly interesting Viogniers emerge where winemakers find the balance between opulence and freshness.

In the northern Rhône, its homeland, Viognier shows its most complex face: apricot and stone fruit, yes, but also a mineral tension when yields remain low. Maison Stephan is our most important partner here for varietal Viogniers and Condrieu. Roche-Audran, Chêne Bleu and Du Coulet also deliver distinctive interpretations.

That Viognier also succeeds south of the Alps is demonstrated by Manincor and Pranzegg in South Tyrol – with somewhat more freshness and Alpine precision.
