Wine Description for Côte Rôtie „Côteaux de Tupin“ AOC 2022 by Maison Stephan

Colour & Appearance
Deep purple with violet reflections and a black core – youthfully concentrated and of impressive depth.
Nose
A fascinating bouquet of remarkable complexity: blackcurrant, blackberries and black cherries meet elderflower and figs. These are joined by blood orange, olives, liquorice and pepper, underpinned by floral notes such as violet and lilac. The subtle oak spice with vanilla and clove frames the fruit elegantly without dominating it.
Palate
Enormously intense yet surprisingly elegant and juicy. The 2022 vintage shows itself to be particularly refined with a sweet fruit core, dark ripe fruit and a subtle meaty note. The Sérine grape variety brings a somewhat restrained, yet all the more refined interpretation of the classic Syrah character. The interplay of power, juice, fine extract sweetness, density and pulsing minerality is superbly balanced.
Terroir & Origin
From a 0.5 hectare vineyard in steep slopes on leucogneiss in Tupin. The vines are partly from 1941, partly from 1993. The original vineyard, which Stephan acquired in 1991, housed plants from 1893. Extreme low yields of only 15-20 hl/ha guarantee the highest concentration.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Sérine, an almost extinct grape variety, closely related to Syrah and Dureza. Vinification according to Jules Chauvet with 24-hour cool pre-fermentation and 20-day carbonic maceration fermentation. Maturation over 24 months in used Jupille oak barrels. Unfiltered, unfined, minimally sulphited – uncompromisingly natural.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Braised lamb shoulder, game dishes such as venison loin or roe deer ragout, duck breast with blackcurrant sauce, aged Comté or Tomme de Savoie.
Special Features
A rare treasure from an almost forgotten grape variety, vinified by one of the most uncompromising natural wine pioneers of the northern Rhône. The combination of ancient vines, extreme low yields and uncompromising craftsmanship makes this wine a unique testament to Côte Rôtie.
