Wine Description for Clos du Chêne Vert Monopole AOC 2020 by Charles Joguet

Character
The Clos du Chêne Vert is a monopoly vineyard site of the legendary Charles Joguet estate in Chinon and represents the aristocratic side of Cabernet Franc on the Loire. This parcel embodies that precision and depth which has distinguished the Joguet house for decades. The 2020 vintage benefited from ideal conditions that lend the wine concentration whilst maintaining finesse – a balance that only few Loire Cabernets achieve.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos du Chêne Vert vineyard site lies on the limestone plateaux of Chinon, where the vines are rooted in sparse, stony soils. These tuffeau terroirs impart the Cabernet Franc with its characteristic minerality and tension. The temperate Loire climate with cool nights preserves aromatic freshness, whilst proximity to the river provides temperature regulation. Charles Joguet, who initiated the renaissance of Chinon in the 1950s, recognised early on the potential of this parcel for age-worthy, terroir-driven wines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Cabernet Franc reveals its true character on the Loire – without the dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon, the variety unfolds its spicy elegance and peppery freshness here. In contrast to Bordeaux interpretations, fruit clarity takes centre stage, accompanied by floral notes and a vibrant acidity structure. The Joguet estate works with traditional methods, extended skin contact and maturation in large wooden casks, which give the wine structure without masking fruit expression. The moderate alcohol content of 13.5% underscores the classical, unmanipulated style.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This Cabernet Franc calls for the regional cuisine of the Loire Valley: Rillettes de Tours, roasted guinea fowl or goat’s cheese from Sainte-Maure are classic companions. The spicy structure harmonises beautifully with mushroom dishes, duck breast or grilled lamb rack with Provençal herbs. The wine also shows its versatile side with lentil dishes and autumnal root vegetables.
