Wine Description for Vogelsang Neustadt Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2023 by Christmann

Colour & Appearance
Platinum-coloured in the glass, brilliant and clear – a Riesling that announces its provenance visually from the outset.
Nose
The Vogelsang 2023 marks another developmental step for this rediscovered vineyard site. Energetic and forceful, yet less puritanical than its predecessors – which suits the wine remarkably well. The aromatics pulse between bright citrus notes, dark spice elements and a zesty freshness. Juicy and vibrant, with a tension that captivates immediately.
Palate
Initially taut and sinewy, then a fascinating dimension unfolds: A charming, subtle extract sweetness meets salty sea breeze – a rare sweet spot in the best sense. The crystalline acidity shows itself more accessible in 2023 than in the previous vintage, without losing precision. Added to this is a cool, wild minerality with hints of stone, tobacco and herbs. A wine with enormous pressure and simultaneously impressive finesse.
Finish
Long, mineral and vibrant. The salty freshness carries far, underpinned by a fine herbal spiciness.
Terroir & Origin
A rebirth: The Vogelsang vineyard site above Neustadt was once renowned, then forgotten. Since 2017, the Christmanns have managed the vineyard biodynamically. The shell limestone from the Triassic period (over 200 million years old), the south-facing aspect with slopes up to 50% and the altitude up to 260 metres create ideal conditions. With only 40 hl/ha yield, the grapes develop extraordinary concentration.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Riesling, spontaneously fermented after a few hours of skin contact. Warm fermentation and maturation in large double cask lend the wine structure without oak influence.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Scallops with lemon butter, turbot with herb sauce, calf sweetbreads or aged Comté. The wine also pairs well with Asian cuisine featuring ginger and coriander.
Special Features
The first Grosses Gewächs from this vineyard site following its rediscovery. A wine that year after year ranks among the great Rieslings of the Palatinate.
