Wine Description for Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc AOC 2023 from La Nerthe
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale straw yellow with delicate pale green reflections – a wine that reveals its youthfulness and freshness already in the glass.
- Nose
- Complex and multi-layered: lemon in all its facets – flesh, pips, zest – meets greengage, yellow apple and exotic carambola. Beneath this lie buttery notes, vanilla, linden blossom tea and linden honey, rounded off by a fine, subtle oak note. A nose that unites elegance and depth.
- Palate
- Here the true greatness of this Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc reveals itself: opulent and sensual, yet never excessive, but wonderfully controlled. The texture is round and silky, at the same time precisely defined. Oak and vanilla dance with anise and liquorice, whilst lemon, peach and pineapple are accompanied by blanched almonds. Substantial, dense, with a body that demands complex cuisine.
- Finish
- Long-lasting with fine minerality and an aftertaste of citrus fruits and spicy oak notes.
- Terroir & Origin
- From the diverse soils of Château La Nerthe: clay and limestone, sand and the famous large pebbles (Galets roulés). One of the few natural springs in the appellation creates, together with centuries-old forests, a unique microclimate – warm by day, cool by night. Ideal conditions for complex white wines.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Blend of 44% Roussanne, 41% Grenache Blanc, 11% Clairette and 4% Bourboulenc. Hand-harvested grapes, slowly pressed. Roussanne and Grenache fermented and aged in barriques (228l) and demi-muids (600l), one third of which are new. Clairette and Bourboulenc partly in stainless steel, partly in demi-muids. Maturation on fine lees for additional texture and complexity.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Lobster in saffron sauce, pan-fried scallops, turbot with truffle butter, calf’s sweetbreads, risotto with porcini mushrooms or mature hard cheeses such as Comté. A wine for sophisticated cuisine.
- Special Characteristics
- At 14.5% vol. powerful, yet never heavy. A white Châteauneuf that combines tradition and modernity – already accessible now, with potential for further development.
