Bourboulenc

Bourboulenc Grape – Historical Watercolour from Viala & Vermorel Ampélographie (1901)

Also known as: Doucillon (Languedoc-Roussillon), Malvoisie (Provence)

Bourboulenc appears austere, almost reserved – a southern French white grape variety that possesses acidity and substance without being ingratiating. The grape ripens slowly, gathering concentration without becoming broad. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape often employed as a subtle counterpoint to the opulence of other varieties, in Provence – for instance at Pibarnon – with spice and a long finish.

In our range, Bourboulenc usually plays a supporting role, but an important one: Saint Jean Du Barroux demonstrates what the variety can bring in terms of freshness and tension. At Marcoux and d'Ouréa in the Rhône Valley it is used in blends – discreet, structured, a grape that prefers to contribute rather than dominate.
