Wine Description for Château Falfas Côtes de Bourg AOC 2019 by Château Falfas
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, clear cherry red with youthful brilliance – a wine that visually announces its vitality from the outset.
- Nose
- Here we encounter an unconventional Bordeaux with character: wild cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant meet animal spice with a hint of horse sweat and warm leather – untamed, yet authentic. Surprising are the notes of bergamot and lavender, which lend the wine a Mediterranean freshness. With air contact, dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans and winter spices such as cinnamon, juniper and black pepper develop. A cool, metallic component adds tension and linearity to the whole.
- Palate
- Gripping and astringent on the attack, with present yet well-integrated tannins. The acidity structure gives the wine backbone, whilst a graphite note provides mineral coolness. Subtle green nuances and a slight sharpness underscore the unpolished character. The fine-grained, slightly tart fruit persists stubbornly on the palate – here the bergamot manifests itself once again. Remarkable: on the palate, the animal notes disappear completely, the wine showing itself balanced and drinkable.
- Finish
- Medium length with lingering fruit and spicy accents. The acidity carries through to the end, leaving a fresh, lively impression.
- Terroir & Origin
- From the Côtes de Bourg, an often underestimated appellation on the right bank of the Gironde. The limestone and clay soils lend the wine its mineral freshness and structure – an authentic expression of this traditional, yet less glamorous Bordeaux region.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Classic Bordeaux blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The animal notes and wild character suggest natural winemaking – a wine with edges and character, prioritising authenticity over approachability.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Perfect with Côte de Boeuf with pommes allumette and Béarnaise sauce, braised beef cheeks with creamed savoy cabbage or, surprisingly, also with a warm bulgur salad with artichokes – the wine’s acidity and herbal spice harmonise beautifully with Mediterranean flavours.
- Special Features
- A Bordeaux that proves the region also masters drinkability. Untamed, characterful and refreshingly different – for lovers of authentic, unadorned wines.
