Wine description for Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru rouge Clos Saint-Jean AOC 2023 by Thomas Morey

Colour & Appearance
A luminous, transparent ruby, which impressively underscores the youthfulness of this Premier Cru – elegant and clear in the glass.
Nose
A youthfully fragrant bouquet with red berries and cherries to the fore. Fine notes of undergrowth, subtle oak aromas and a hint of cinnamon complement these. The aromatics are attractive and promise development potential.
Palate
Aromatically lively and fresh, with a cheerful character. Structurally, the wine is still in its development phase – the tannins currently dominate the palate somewhat and slow the drinking flow. Yet behind this lies a juicy red cherry fruit, which reveals its quality in the finish.
Finish
The finale presents itself juicy with pleasant red cherry fruit, which holds promise for a fine evolution.
Terroir & Origin
Clos Saint-Jean is a historical jewel: planted in 589, it once belonged to the Saint-Jean le Grand convent in Autun. The walled climat encompasses a total of 14.16 hectares and is characterised by red soils. Thomas Morey’s parcel was replanted in 2017 – which explains the youthful freshness of the wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir, largely destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in neutral barrel and tank. Malolactic fermentation proceeds naturally. Maturation with approximately 20% new oak. Noteworthy: minimal sulphur addition only in the final six months, with total levels remaining below 35 mg/l – an approach that should delight purists.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Pan-roasted duck breast, Coq au Vin, veal medallions with morels or a mature Comté harmonise beautifully with this Burgundian Premier Cru.
Special Characteristics
A wine with clear ageing potential. The young vines from 2017 still need time to unfold their full complexity. Those who purchase now should bring patience – in 3-5 years, this Clos Saint-Jean will have considerably more to reveal.
