Wine Description for Marsannay „La Montagne“ rouge AOC 2022 by Charlopin Tissier
- Colour & Appearance
- Dense garnet red with youthful brilliance – a Pinot Noir that already hints at its origins from cooler elevated vineyard sites through its visual character.
- Nose
- Of the three single-vineyard Marsannays from this house, La Montagne presents itself as the most approachable charmer. The bouquet opens generously with wild strawberries, raspberries and dark cherries, complemented by plum notes. Beneath lies a complex layer of dried herbs, undergrowth and mineral hints of stone and twigs – classic Burgundy elegance with depth.
- Palate
- A seductive wine that already delights despite its youth. The juiciness of the Pinot Noir takes centre stage, supported by subtle, silky tannins. Remarkable is the vibrant acidity, which builds pressure and lends freshness and tension to the red fruit. After some air contact, a wine of impressive balance unfolds – hard to resist.
- Finish
- Medium to long, with persistent fruitiness and a fine mineral spice that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site La Montagne (2.66 ha total, of which 0.46 ha owned) lies above Les Longeroies and extends partly into the forest. The south-facing aspect is cooled by proximity to the woodland – ideal conditions for aromatic complexity and freshness.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Pinot Noir, completely destemmed. Following cool pre-fermentation maceration, spontaneous fermentation takes place. Ageing lasts 16 months on fine lees in 228-litre barriques (mainly François Frères) with 20-30% new oak – enough to provide structure without masking the fruit.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Classically with rabbit in Dijon mustard sauce with carrots, with sweet and sour kidneys with elderflower juice and rosemary, or surprisingly well with a tart with fennel, feta and candied cherry tomatoes.
- Special Features
- A Marsannay that demonstrates this often underrated appellation is capable of great elegance. Already approachable now, but will benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age.
