Wine Description for Saint-Amour Climat „Côte de Besset“ Zen AOC 2023 by Bret Brothers
- Colour & Appearance
- A very pale, transparent crimson red, which already announces the purity and elegance of this Gamay in the glass. The clarity and luminosity are reminiscent of the finest Pinot Noirs from Burgundy – a visual promise of finesse rather than power.
- Nose
- Enchantingly fragrant and complex: lavender and violets meet blood oranges and sweet cherries, underpinned by red berries. Subtle notes of yeast, tobacco, dry wood and a hint of cinnamon complete the picture. An aromatic profile that shifts between floral elegance and spicy depth.
- Palate
- Round, silky and of remarkable smoothness. The lavender notes give way on the palate to more intense violet aromas, which combine with crushed red berry fruit and cinnamon cherries. The silky tannins carry the sweet fruit core effortlessly, whilst liquorice nuances and a vibrant acidity provide balance. A Beaujolais with uncomplicated, yet by no means simple drinking appeal.
- Finish
- Medium length, with lingering cherry and spice notes, carried by fresh acidity. The floral component fades elegantly.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the north-eastern slope Côte de Besset in Saint-Amour, the northernmost cru vineyard site of Beaujolais. The characteristic blue sandstone gives this wine its mineral freshness and floral elegance. Harvest on 7 September 2023.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Gamay, vinified as carbonic maceration with whole grapes – the classic Beaujolais method. Ten months ageing in used barriques impart structure without oak dominance. Noteworthy: pH 3.77, total sulphur under 10 mg/l – an almost sulphur-free, natural approach.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Coq au vin, duck breast with cherry sauce, grilled tuna, mushroom risotto or semi-aged hard cheeses. The versatility also allows for charcuterie and terrine.
- Special Features
- A Beaujolais that demonstrates what Gamay can achieve in the finest vineyard sites: finesse rather than fruit bomb, depth rather than superficiality. The minimalist use of sulphur underscores the philosophy of Bret Brothers.
