Wine Description for Riesling Frauenberg GG 2022 from Battenfeld-Spanier

Colour & Appearance
Medium straw yellow in the glass, clear and luminous – a Riesling that already hints at its origins visually.
Nose
Here the Frauenberg reveals itself from its introverted, yet fascinating side. Charm and creaminess dominate initially, accompanied by a subtly smoky note reminiscent of flint. With air contact, the wine develops a spicier, darker dimension. The fruit deliberately takes a back seat: lemon, lemon balm and lemongrass are present, but never in the foreground. Expression is not the goal – finesse is the essence of this wine.
Palate
On the palate, the true class of the Frauenberg unfolds. Charming and pure, with a subtle extract sweetness that manifests itself in yellow and white-fleshed fruit. The mineral spice is perceptible, but never intrusive. What impresses is the already discernible balance of fruit, spice, savoury herbal notes and a gripping extract with fine phenolics. Like a polished semi-precious stone, precision and depth are evident here – a wine that will develop over decades.
Finish
Long-lasting and mineral, with a fine salinity that makes the limestone cliffs palpable. The herbal spice lingers and leaves an elegant, dry impression.
Terroir & Origin
The Frauenberg lies in the southern Wonnegau near Nieder-Flörsheim at altitudes up to 280 metres with slopes of up to 40%. First documented in 1290, it was once owned by a convent. The defining element: limestone gravel on pure limestone bedrock. The vines must root deeply to access minerals, and must withstand both heat and cool winds – a terroir that shapes character.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Riesling, hand-harvested and strictly selected. Spontaneous fermentation and maturation in large wooden casks and double casks give the wine its creamy texture and complexity at moderate 12.5% alcohol.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Smoked salmon in puff pastry with crispy kale, warm char with smoked potato purée and tarragon butter or guinea fowl with chickpeas, chorizo and almonds – the Frauenberg harmonises with smoke, fat and spicy aromas.
Special Features
A Großes Gewächs that rewards patience. Battenfeld-Spanier creates here a Riesling that does not seek to please, but to convince – through depth, precision and decades of ageing potential.
