Wine Description for Barolo Via Nuova DOCG 2020 1500ml Magnum by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli
- Colour & Appearance
- Dark cherry red with violet reflections and rusty inclusions – a Barolo that doesn’t hide its youth and already displays the first developmental nuances.
- Nose
- Chiara Boschis achieves a fascinating aromatic profile here: lilac and pansy dance around dark berry fruit of elderberry, blackcurrant and blackberry, complemented by ripe plum. The spicy component impresses with cubeb pepper, dried herbs such as marjoram and sage as well as balsamic notes of cedarwood and forest floor. A multi-layered, dark aromatic interplay that possesses depth.
- Palate
- The first impression reveals a young, still somewhat austere Barolo with firm tannin structure, which is however perfectly balanced by precise acidity and cool minerality. The fruit shows itself fresher than on the nose – sour cherry and raspberry bring finesse and elegance. The wine flows silkily across the palate, the spice integrates harmoniously. Already after a few minutes in the glass, the tannin develops in a finer, more accessible direction.
- Finish
- Persistent and spicy with lingering herbal notes and fine tannin structure that promises length and development potential.
- Terroir & Origin
- An ambitious blend from seven vineyard sites across 3.7 hectares: Terlo, Paiagallo and Liste in Barolo, Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi in Monforte d’Alba as well as Gabutti e Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba. The vineyards lie at an average altitude of 340 metres with various south-southeast exposures – a mosaic of Barolo terroir.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo, fermented in stainless steel tank with frequent remontage and pigeage. Maturation in French barriques with light toasting and 30% new wood content, followed by one year in bottle. The methodology remains deliberately restrained to let the origin speak for itself.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- BBQ duck with salted cherries and savoy cabbage, braised lamb shoulder with roast potatoes and rosemary jus or roasted white cabbage with béarnaise sauce.
- Special Features
- The 2020 vintage was marked by extremes – early start, thunderstorms in June, cool nights in September. The result: 30-40% reduced yield, but concentrated grapes with perfect balance. Only 278 magnum bottles were produced – a rare collector’s piece from an extraordinary year.
