Wine Description for Tros Blanc Saleres 2015 1500ml Magnum by Alfredo Arribas
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous straw yellow with warm golden reflections – clear, gleaming, of remarkable density. Even in the glass, a wine of substance and character announces itself.
- Nose
- The nose is complex and idiosyncratic – precisely what one doesn’t necessarily expect from Montsant. Exotic fruit dominates initially: honeydew melon, papaya and pomelo meet nutty, almost cereal-like notes of roasted barley malt and cornflakes. These are joined by spicy notes of bay leaf, white pepper and turmeric, along with a fine hint of freshly cooked basmati rice. Unusual, precise, captivating.
- Palate
- On the palate, the wine unfolds with a creamy, broad-textured character and a fullness that hardly surprises at 14.5% alcohol, yet never feels heavy-handed. The yellow-fleshed fruit – still restrained on the nose behind mineral austerity – gains in ripeness and volume here. At the same time, the wine remains lively, structured and threaded through with a fine, almost stony tension.
- Finish
- The finish is long, saline and remarkably appetising. The fruit makes an elegant turn towards minerality – a resounding, mouth-watering echo that recalls the austere power of the terroir. Sustained and satisfying.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the single vineyard site “El Masroig” in the DO Montsant, one of the most exciting, still underrated appellations in Catalonia. The soils are sparse and poor – ideal for old vines that must root deeply to survive. In certain vintages, Alfredo Arribas supplements the wine with grapes from “Notaria”, a vineyard site with heavier soils that lends the wine additional fullness.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Garnatxa Blanca (Grenache blanc) – a grape variety capable of great white wine artistry in the right hands and on the right terroir. Alfredo Arribas proves this impressively. The magnum bottle guarantees particularly slow, gentle maturation and promises further development potential.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A wine of character demands dishes with character: Gratinéed cauliflower with smoked sheep’s cheese, black olives and mashed potato plays perfectly with the saline minerality. Pan-fried king prawns with red pepper sauce, watermelon and nasturtium captures the exotic fruit and spice. And grilled lamb loin with yellow pepper and wild garlic polenta meets the creamy texture and fullness of the wine on equal terms.
- Special Features
- A magnum of an already mature vintage from one of Montsant’s most exciting vineyard sites – that is a rare opportunity. This wine is no easy-drinking white for light entertainment, but a serious, impeccably crafted white wine with depth. Eureka, indeed.
