Wine Description for Ahrweiler Spätburgunder 2023 by Bertram-Baltes

Colour & Appearance
A transparent garnet red in the glass, which already announces the elegance and finesse of this Pinot Noir visually – classic Burgundian character with youthful luminosity.
Nose
The reductive note characteristic of Bertram-Baltes is already well integrated here, with a hint of matchstick that quickly fades. Behind this unfolds a multi-layered bouquet of wild berries, cherries and pomegranate juice, accompanied by warmed herbs and the rustic character of warm farmhouse bread. Mineral notes of stone and earthy undergrowth lend depth and complexity.
Palate
Despite moderate 11% alcohol, this Spätburgunder shows itself to be remarkably present and structured. The juicy, dark fruit of blackberries, sloes and cherries is carried by a vibrant acidity that lends the wine freshness and tension. Smoky notes, rustic earthiness and subtle spice notes complement the flavour profile. The fine-grained tannins are already well integrated and promise further ageing potential. Despite its clear structure, the wine already displays a somewhat sensual and rounded character.
Finish
The aftertaste is persistent and mineral, with a beautiful length carried by fresh acidity and fine tannins.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from Ahrweiler vineyard sites with vines averaging 25 years old. The soils of graywacke, quartzite and loess loam shape the mineral character of this wine and give it its typical Ahr Valley identity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Farmed according to organic and biodynamic principles as well as permafrost cultivation. Spontaneous fermentation in open stainless steel fermenters, maturation over two winters in used large and half-large oak casks. No chaptalization, emphasised reductive maturation, only minimal sulphur addition before bottling.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Pairs excellently with game dishes, braised beef, Coq au Vin, mushroom risotto or aged cheese. The rustic notes also harmonise wonderfully with root vegetables and hearty stews.
Special Characteristics
An authentic, unfiltered village wine that bears the signature of Bertram-Baltes: purist, terroir-driven and with the courage to embrace reduction. A Pinot Noir for lovers of natural, unmanipulated wines.
