Wine Description for Handwerk Spätburgunder 2023 by Bertram-Baltes
- Colour & Appearance
- Transparent ruby red – a wine that reveals its origins and minimalist winemaking approach right in the glass. Clear, luminous and brimming with youthful freshness.
- Nose
- The nose displays the estate’s characteristic reductive signature: a fascinating blend of struck flint and blackcurrant, which opens up with air. Beneath this unfold violets, sloe and sea buckthorn, complemented by barberry and sour cherry. Herbal notes, petrichor (that earthy rain-soaked scent), juniper and pepper lend the bouquet complexity and depth.
- Palate
- Here the full brilliance of this approach reveals itself: with just 10.5 vol. %, the wine develops remarkable intensity and present acidity. It fairly crackles across the tongue – juicy, fresh and vibrant. The taut, fine tannins provide structure without dominating. A hint of sweet extract brings charm and balance, whilst the crisp fruit combined with acidity and tannins delivers remarkable grip and irresistible drinkability.
- Finish
- Clear, precise and lingering with mineral freshness and a fine herbal spice that resonates long after.
- Terroir & Origin
- The estate wine comes from younger vineyards in Ahrweiler, Dernau and Mayschoss on the Ahr. All vineyard sites are managed according to organic and biodynamic principles as well as permaculture criteria.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Spätburgunder, treated with the same care as the estate’s vineyard-designated wines: meticulous hand-harvesting, spontaneous fermentation in open stainless steel fermenters, maturation in used large and medium oak casks. No chaptalization, deliberately reductive winemaking, minimal sulphiting before bottling. The wine spends two winters in the cellar.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Perfect with game birds, roasted duck breast, pink roasted lamb or mushroom dishes. The vibrant acidity also makes it an ideal companion to charcuterie and aged cheeses.
- Special Characteristics
- A remarkable testament to the fact that great Pinot Noir needs no high alcohol. The combination of organic viticulture, uncompromising craftsmanship and low alcohol yields a food-friendly, authentic Spätburgunder with soul.
