Bertram Baltes

Julia Bertram in the Sonnenberg vineyard on the Ahr

She was German Wine Queen, he the son of a winemaking family from Dernau – together, Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes have created one of the most exciting wineries on the Ahr. In 2014, they bottled their first vintage. The accolade "Discovery of the Year" followed immediately.

What makes them different? Pinot Noir under 12 percent alcohol that nonetheless possesses depth and concentration. No chaptalization, no fining, spontaneous fermentation in local oak, bottled unfiltered. The fifth generation of a winemaking family that proves that light-footed need not mean lightweight.

More about Bertram-Baltes

Light-footed elegance instead of alcohol power

For a long time, the Ahr Valley followed one rule: the riper, the better. Julia and Benedikt have turned this formula on its head. Their Pinot Noirs are harvested earlier, reaching natural 11 to 12 per cent alcohol and developing an elegance reminiscent of great Burgundies. Like Christmann in the Palatinate, it's about precision and provenance, not power. The estate manages around 4 hectares in the finest vineyard sites of the Ahr Valley, entirely organic since 2020. Yields are modest at 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare – quality always comes first.

Slate and cool nights

The Pinot Noir finds ideal conditions here: slate weathering soils store the day's warmth, cool nights from the Ahr Valley preserve freshness. The result is wines of Burgundian finesse with distinctive character. The steep slopes in Dernau, Ahrweiler and Mayschoß demand complete hand labour – and reward it with grapes of unique concentration. Some parcels have slopes of up to 70 per cent.

Craftsmanship without compromise

The Handwerk Pinot Noir 2023 is the perfect introduction to the world of Bertram-Baltes: cherry-fruited, precise, with fine spice. Spontaneous fermentation in local oak, no fining, unfiltered bottling – every wine is a commitment to craftsmanship. The vineyard site wines such as the Dernauer Pfarrwingert 2023 demonstrate the depth this philosophy can achieve. The barrels come exclusively from German coopers using Franconian oak.

From flood to new beginning

The Ahr flood of 2021 hit Dernau with full force. Cellars flooded, barrels swept away, vintages lost. Julia and Benedikt did not give up. With support from colleagues and wine enthusiasts from across Germany, they rebuilt the estate – without compromises on quality. The vintages since 2022 prove it: the wines are better than ever. When you drink a Neuenahrer Sonnenberg 2022 today, you taste not only great Pinot Noir, but also the indomitable spirit of a young generation of winemakers.
