Wine Description for Ahrweiler Spätburgunder 2021 by Bertram-Baltes

Colour & Appearance
Muted cherry red with vibrant violet reflections – a Pinot that doesn’t deny its cool-climate origins. The medium colour intensity points to gentle extraction and elegant style.
Nose
Seductively fresh and precise: sour cherries and wild raspberries dominate, accompanied by elderflower and fine dark floral notes. The aromatics are utterly beguiling, yet never jammy or overloaded – pure invitation to drink.
Palate
Here the true class reveals itself: mineral and tautly structured, yet playful and of remarkable finesse. The red fruit remains present, but is carried by an invigorating freshness. At just 11% alcohol, a textbook example of elegance over power – feminine, incisive and with that drinking flow that tempts you to the next sip.
Finish
Medium length with lingering fruitiness and a fine mineral coolness that leaves you wanting more. Not a trace of heaviness – instead, lightness and precision.
Terroir & Origin
From the legendary steep vineyard sites around Dernau on the Ahr, where slate soils and cool microclimate create ideal conditions for refined Pinot Noir. Julia Bertram and Benny Baltes have access to some of the finest parcels here.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Hand-harvested Spätburgunder, spontaneously fermented in barrels made from local oak. Bottled unfiltered and unfined – an authentic, unvarnished expression of the vintage. The organic approach (conversion in the first year, goal: biodynamics) shows itself in the wine’s vibrancy and clarity.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Lightly chilled, it pairs beautifully with beetroot baked in salt crust, pan-fried zander with blood sausage on pointed cabbage or ham puff pastry with mountain cheese. The structure and freshness make it the perfect dining companion.
Special Features
A debut that turns heads: The winemaking couple Bertram-Baltes combines experience from Franconia with Ahr terroir and creates a Pinot that unites depth with drinkability – never loud, always expressive. A promising start for the „new star in the Ahrweiler sky“.
