Wine Description for Les Furieuses Coteaux Champenois Rouge AOC from Waris-Larmandier

Colour & Appearance
A slightly translucent ruby red in the glass, visually heralding the lightness and elegance of this unusual still wine from Champagne. The transparent clarity reveals a wine without heavy oak and with minimal extraction.
Nose
The bouquet presents itself with delicate red fruit character: redcurrants and sour cherry dominate, accompanied by pomegranate and damson. These are joined by vegetal notes of stems and undergrowth with a hint of damp leaves – an aromatic complexity reminiscent of Burgundian Pinots.
Palate
On the palate, a light-footed wine reveals itself with pronounced, elevated acidity that lends it freshness and drinkability. The dark, ripe fruit is interwoven with stem aromas, giving the wine a rustic, authentic character. At only 12% alcohol, it embodies a new style – could this indeed be Champagne’s interpretation of the modern Vin de Soif?
Terroir & Origin
Waris-Larmandier belongs to the innovative Champagne houses exploring the potential of their parcels for still wines as well. The Coteaux Champenois Rouge AOC comes from the chalk soils of Champagne, which lend the wine its characteristic minerality and finesse.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The wine is vinified primarily from Pinot Meunier with some Pinot Noir. The inclusion of stems during fermentation gives the wine its structure-building tannin component and characteristic vegetal notes – a deliberately natural approach.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The vibrant acidity and light structure make it an ideal companion for tarte flambée with bacon and onions, tart with butternut squash and chèvre, or a gratin of sweet potatoes, bacon and cashew nuts. Also an excellent choice with charcuterie and light poultry dishes.
Special Features
A bold still wine from a region famous for sparkling wine. The „Furious Ones“ – as the name suggests – break with conventions and demonstrate that Champagne can produce fascinating wines beyond the bubble as well.
