Wine Description for Chamery Rouge Coteaux Champenois 2022 by Bonnet-Ponson
- Colour & Appearance
- A luminous, clear cherry red – transparent and vibrant, exactly as one would expect from an unadulterated Pinot Meunier from Champagne.
- Nose
- Inviting and open, the nose presents a fresh bouquet of sweet cherries, plums and raspberries, underpinned by a hint of yeast and a delicate, pleasantly lactic note. No sulphur clouds the picture – Cyril Bonnet lets the Meunier speak simply and honestly.
- Palate
- What the nose promises, the palate delivers: juicy, direct and unadorned. The fruit is precise and vibrant, the texture fine-grained and pleasant. The uncrushed grapes lend the wine a subtle yet perceptible tannin structure, which gives it backbone without slowing down the lightness. A wine that drinks like a law of nature – effortlessly and with genuine pleasure.
- Finish
- Medium-length, fresh and clean. The finish fades with a pleasant fruit freshness and a light mineral aftertaste – the chalky clay of Chamery makes itself known.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from Chamery, a village in Champagne whose soils consist of chalky clay with limestone pebbles – beneath which lie sands and fossilised shells. A terroir that bestows both freshness and depth.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Pinot Meunier – rarely presented so pure and self-assured. The grapes were left uncrushed, fermentation initiated spontaneously. Ageing and maturation took place in sandstone eggs and 400-litre barrels. Bottled without sulphur addition – a statement for authenticity and trust in the terroir.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A versatile companion: dim sum with their complexity, delicate saltimbocca with Parma ham and sage or a stuffed pumpkin with rice, cheese, harissa and toasted seeds – Chamery Rouge finds its place with all of these.
- Special Features
- A Coteaux Champenois – that is, a still red wine from Champagne – is a rarity in itself. The fact that Cyril Bonnet forgoes sulphur here and brings the Meunier completely unadorned into the bottle makes this wine a small, sincere work of art. Glouglou at the highest level – that is the finest compliment one can pay to an everyday wine.
