Wine Description for Vogelsang Spätburgunder GG VDP Grosse Lage 2021 by Christmann

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, medium ruby red with brilliant clarity. The wine displays the transparency typical of first-class Spätburgunder, promising elegance and finesse.
Nose
Seductive and multi-layered. Initially ripe wild strawberries and sour cherries dominate, followed by subtle notes of forest floor and damp leaves. With aeration, spicy accents of white pepper, clove and a fine smokiness develop. The biodynamic viticulture reveals itself in the authentic terroir expression and mineral undertone.
Palate
Precise and tension-filled. The wine combines power with elegance – at a moderate 13% alcohol, it displays remarkable concentration without any heaviness. The silky tannins are perfectly integrated, the fruit cool and focused. Red berries meet stony minerality, carried by a vital acidity structure that lends the wine tension and freshness. The texture is fine-meshed, almost Burgundian in its delicacy.
Finish
Long, persistent and vibrant with energy. The minerality carries far, accompanied by cherry stone notes and a hint of graphite. A Spätburgunder with many years ahead of it.
Terroir & Origin
Vogelsang is one of the great vineyard sites of the Pfalz’s Mittelhaardt. The site benefits from an ideal microclimate between warmth for body and coolness for elegance. Biodynamic viticulture since 2004 allows the wines to authentically express their origins.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This GG demands sophisticated cuisine: roasted pigeon, venison loin with lingonberries, Coq au Vin or a mature Époisses. Also an excellent choice with porcini risotto or duck breast with cherry sauce.
Special Features
VDP Grosse Lage – the highest quality classification in German viticulture. Steffen Christmann’s uncompromising work in the vineyard and biodynamic approach create Spätburgunder of world-class calibre that need not hide from Burgundian benchmarks.
