Colour & Appearance

Luminous, transparent ruby red with delicate garnet reflections – the typical, elegant colour expression of a classically vinified Palatinate Spätburgunder that promises depth without heaviness.

Nose

The nose is of striking purity and precision. Fresh red cherries and raspberries open readily, accompanied by notes of ripe plums and a hint of violets. Beneath lies a fine, cool minerality – almost stony-chalky – that unmistakably bears the biodynamic signature of the Christmann house. Subtle spice, a touch of cedarwood and dried herbs lend the nose complexity and depth.

Palate

On the palate, the Vogelsang reveals itself as slender and precise, with a silky texture that reflects the 2021 vintage in all its strength: cool, structured, carried by vibrant acidity. The fruit – sour cherry, redcurrant – remains clear and focused, never opulent. The tannins are finely honed, firm enough for longevity, yet already accessible and inviting.

Finish

Long, clear and characterised by an invigorating salinity that makes the wine irresistible. The finish underscores the mineral depth of the vineyard site and leaves a lasting, elegant impression.

Terroir & Origin

The Vogelsang vineyard site in the Mittelhaardt counts among the most tradition-rich Spätburgunder terroirs of the Palatinate. Warm days and cool nights provide the ideal balance between ripeness and freshness – full-bodied enough for substance, cool enough for elegance and fine minerality. The soil imparts the wine with a distinctive rock structure.

Grape Variety & Vinification

Pure Spätburgunder from biodynamic viticulture, to which Steffen Christmann has been consistently committed since 2004. The vinification follows the principle of non-intervention: the vineyard speaks, the winemaker listens. The result is a wine of high individuality that could not be created anywhere else in the world.

Food Pairing Recommendations

Excellent with roasted duck with cherry sauce, lamb loin with herb crust or a classic Coq au Vin. Also an extraordinary accompaniment to aged Pinot cheese or mushroom risotto with truffle.
