Wine Description for Viognier IGP 2023 from Chêne Bleu
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium straw yellow with brilliant reflections – a wine that already displays its freshness and vibrancy in the glass.
- Nose
- A classic, indeed textbook Viognier that immediately impresses with its aromatic intensity. The nose opens with a bouquet of jasmine, broom and acacia blossoms, complemented by honeysuckle and clover. Behind these shimmer ripe peaches and apricots, whilst a hint of beeswax lends complexity. The elevation of the vineyards at 550 metres makes itself known: lemon zest and lemongrass provide cool, precise accents, rounded out by subtle notes of pineapple and vanilla from the oak ageing.
- Palate
- On the palate, this Viognier unfolds its full charm. The texture is remarkable: silky and supple, with a coating fullness that never feels heavy or oily. The ripe acidity lends the wine tension and drinkability. The floral notes return, accompanied by pear, almonds and lily of the valley. The balance between fruit, flowers and subtle oak is excellent – a wine that unites elegance and substance.
- Finish
- Medium to long, with lingering floral and stone fruit aromas. The freshness remains present through to the end, whilst the silky texture resonates.
- Terroir & Origin
- The 20-year-old vines grow at 550 metres elevation on a north-facing slope on stony clay-limestone soils. This exceptional altitude in the southern Rhône lends the wine that cool elegance and precision which distinguishes it from typical southern Viogniers.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Viognier, gently pressed and spontaneously fermented. Ageing took place over eight months in Demi-Muids (600-litre barrels), which lends the wine structure and complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- An ideal companion to scallops, lobster with saffron sauce, pan-fried monkfish or chicken with morels. Also an excellent choice with goat’s cheese, Thai curries or asparagus with hollandaise.
- Special Characteristics
- An altitude Viognier that combines the typical opulence of the grape variety with alpine freshness and precision – unusual for the southern Rhône and all the more exciting for it.
