Wine Description for Roero Valmaggiore Riserva DOCG 2021 by Valfaccenda

Colour & Appearance
Classic ruby red with pomegranate reflections at the rim of the glass – a visual promise of the elegance of Nebbiolo from Roero.
Nose
Fascinatingly multi-layered and positively mystical: red berries and sweet fruits merge with dried rose petals, frankincense and an exotic spice palette of cardamom and clove. The aromatic complexity is grounded by a cool, stony minerality – a fragrance profile that invites lingering.
Palate
Expansive and juicy, with ripe fruit and a fine, almost sweetly nuanced fruitiness. The tannins show themselves ripe and present, without dominating, whilst the invigorating acidity provides structure and drinking flow. A wine with substance and Italian temperament.
Finish
Persistent and spicy, with lingering spice notes and mineral freshness – a finale that underscores the wine’s complexity.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the single vineyard site Valmaggiore in Audinaggio, municipality of Vezza d’Alba. The historic vineyard from 1947 lies on an extremely steep slope with south-southeast-southwest exposure on sandy soils – manageable only by hand labour. This demanding site lends the wine its characteristic minerality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Nebbiolo, harvested at optimal ripeness. After several weeks of maceration, the wine matures in barrel, is bottled at the waning moon and subsequently receives almost two years of bottle age. The Riserva designation is awarded only in exceptional vintages – 2021 was evidently such a year.
Food Pairing Recommendations
An ideal companion to braised dishes, grilled meats and – quite classically Piedmontese – to offal. Excellent also with Brasato al Barolo, Ossobuco or aged hard cheeses.
Special Characteristics
A Roero with soul and history: The old vineyard from 1947 and the uncompromising hand labour on the steep slope create a wine that combines the fire of Italy with the finesse of Nebbiolo. At 14% alcohol powerful, but never heavy.
