Wine Description for SP68 Rosso IGT Sicilia 2024 by Occhipinti

Character
Arianna Occhipinti’s SP68 Rosso embodies the essence of southern Sicily in its most accessible form. Named after the road that runs through her vineyards, this wine is a light-footed, convivial interpretation of indigenous grape varieties. At just 12.5% alcohol, it deliberately defies the trend towards powerhouses, focusing instead on freshness, elegance and vivacity. The cuvée of Frappato and Nero d’Avola combines the floral delicacy of one with the structural backbone of the other to create a harmonious, authentic everyday wine.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyards lie in south-eastern Sicily, near the baroque city of Vittoria, on calcareous, reddish soils. The Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers is tempered by cooling sea breezes. Arianna Occhipinti, a pioneer of Sicily’s biodynamic movement, cultivates her vines according to strict ecological principles. The region is historically renowned for light, fragrant red wines – a counterpoint to the concentrated, high-alcohol wines that long defined Sicily.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The indigenous variety Frappato contributes cherry fruit, floral notes and a characteristic lightness. Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s most important red grape, provides structure, depth and Mediterranean spice. Occhipinti works according to natural principles: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, minimal sulphur, no fining or filtration. Maturation is traditional, often in cement or large wooden casks, to preserve fruit clarity. The result is a wine of remarkable purity and drinkability.
Food Pairing
A versatile companion to Mediterranean cuisine: perfect with grilled tuna, pasta alla Norma with aubergines, caponata or spicy tomato dishes. The moderate structure harmonises beautifully with pizza, antipasti and mild hard cheeses such as Pecorino. Thanks to its freshness, also excellent lightly chilled with charcuterie or as an uncomplicated terrace wine on warm summer evenings.
