In the glass
Colour
Straw yellow with luminous reflections and slight sediment.
Nose
Fully ripe melon, peach and green apricot meet the Mediterranean herbal spiciness of basil, bay leaf and caper leaf — accompanied by a fine saline note that evokes a sea breeze.
Palate
Juicy on entry with a crisp contour and fine grip; the fruit feels extract-driven, like peach and apricot kernels, while invigorating bitter notes of bay leaf and capers round it off, above which floats the fragrance of Muscat d'Alexandria.
Character
Light-footed, aromatic and of striking freshness — a Sicilian white wine that places fragrance and spice rather than power in the foreground.
Pairing
Grilled sardines with herbs, Sicilian caponata, pasta with courgettes and mint or tangy goat's cheese.
Notes
Hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented with around two weeks of skin maceration, bottled unfiltered; grapes from organic cultivation on sandy-calcareous soils at 280 m altitude — named after the historic SP68 wine road that runs directly past the estate.
Tasting note
Colour & appearance
Bright straw yellow with pale reflections and fine sediment – an honest picture of a wine that is deliberately bottled unfiltered.
Nose
An equilateral triangle of fruit, herbs and salty breeze: fully ripe melon, peach and green apricot meet fresh basil, bay leaf and caper leaves. Above it all floats the unmistakable, distinctive scent of Muscat d’Alexandria – floral, yet never cloying.
Palate
Juicy attack with a firm contour and fine grip – the two weeks of skin maceration leave their assertive signature. The fruit reveals itself in the extract, recalling peach and apricot kernels, while invigorating bitter notes of bay leaf and capers provide drive and tension. Dry, taut and remarkably cool on the palate.
Finish
Firm-saline and refreshingly long, with lingering herbal spice and a core of stone fruit – a finale that evokes the coast rather than the Sicilian heat.
Terroir & origin
The grapes grow at around 280 metres above sea level near Vittoria, in south-eastern Sicily, on soils of red sand, chalk and sub-Apennine limestone. Arianna Occhipinti tends her vineyards without any irrigation – a radical decision in this climate, which lends the wines their tension.
Grape variety & vinification
A cuvée of 60% Muscat d’Alexandria (Zibibbo) and 40% Albanello from vines averaging 15 years of age. Hand-harvested, spontaneous fermentation, around two weeks of skin contact, followed by six months of ageing in concrete tanks – bottled unfiltered.
Food recommendations
A wine for the table by the sea: grilled sardines, Pasta con le sarde, Caponata or Fritto misto. Also a brilliant choice with goat’s cheese and dishes featuring green olives and capers.
Special features
At just 11.5% alcohol, the SP68 Bianco is one of the most light-footed white wines of southern Italy – named after the Strada Provinciale 68, along which merchants once carried Sicilian wines to the ports. A white wine with skin contact, grip and a saline nerve, showing Muscat from its cool, serious side.
