Wine Description for Siccagno DOC 2023 by Occhipinti

Character
The Siccagno by Arianna Occhipinti is far more than a Sicilian red wine – it is a declaration. A declaration of allegiance to a landscape that knows heat and aridity, to old vines and to a winemaker who has redefined Sicily without betraying its soul. The name itself – “siccagno”, a Sicilian dialect word for dry-farmed land – carries the terroir already in its title.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes grow in south-eastern Sicily, in the area around Vittoria, on barren, mineral-rich soils beneath the blazing Mediterranean sun. Here, work is carried out without artificial irrigation – the vines drive their roots deep into the earth to find water. The result is a natural concentration and intensity that is not forced through cellar interventions, but springs from the land itself. Organic viticulture is self-evident for Occhipinti.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s great indigenous red wine variety, shows its earth-bound, serious side here. Occhipinti vinifies with minimal intervention, relying on spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts and a gentle maturation that keeps the fruit vibrant and allows the terroir to speak. No artifice, no over-extraction – instead transparency and authenticity. The wine is dry, with a structure that promises depth without imposing heaviness.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The Siccagno is a table companion for Mediterranean cuisine in its most honest form. It harmonises beautifully with grilled lamb, Pasta alla Norma or a rustic Arancino al ragù. It also reveals its characteristic warmth alongside aged Pecorino cheeses or a simple Caponata. A wine that thrives best over a long evening with good conversation.
