Wine Description for Schlossberg Achkarren Spätburgunder GG 2021 by Franz Keller
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous cherry red with delicate violet reflections and a pale rim – a classic appearance for Spätburgunder from this altitude.
- Nose
- Extraordinarily dark and mystical, this GG presents itself with remarkable complexity. Blackcurrant, raspberry and blackberry dominate, underpinned by a robust sour cherry. Subtle notes of juniper and black pepper add further complexity. The floral side reveals itself in dark tones: hibiscus, violet and pansy. A hint of hazelnut develops with air contact, whilst a shy herbal spice lingers in the background.
- Palate
- Here the Schlossberg reveals its true greatness. Dense and compact, yet simultaneously silky cool and delicate – a remarkable balancing act. The dark fruit flows into a fine, concentrated stream with clear definition. White pepper and fennel seed bring spicy accents. The fine, tight-knit tannins coat the mouth persistently and anchor themselves on the palate for minutes. At just 12.5% alcohol, this displays impressive concentration without heaviness.
- Finish
- Long-lasting, enduring and of remarkable precision. The fruit carries far, the tannins grip firmly – a finish that lingers memorably.
- Terroir & Origin
- The VDP Grand Cru Schlossberg in Achkarren is wind-protected, extremely steep and characterised by distinctive heat accumulation. A parcel with black volcanic soil and a historic dry stone wall up to four metres high forms the heart of the vineyard. Fritz Keller rescued the ancient vines from grubbing up – a preservation of cultural heritage made possible only through proof of a grandmother from Achkarren.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Spätburgunder from old vines, supplemented by Sélection Massale from the historic vine material since 2009. Aged for 18 months in barrique with 35% new oak – restrained enough to let the origin speak for itself.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Sauerbraten with potato dumplings and red cabbage, grilled Wagyu flank steak with broad beans, oven-roasted white cabbage with nut butter or robust game dishes and mature hard cheeses in general.
- Special Features
- A Grand Cru that lives Burgundian philosophy: the grape variety is deliberately absent from the label – origin pure. A wine that transcends convention and demonstrates what Baden is capable of.
