Info

In the VDP. Große Lage Schlossberg in Achkarren is home to Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The centrepiece of the site is protected from the wind and extremely steep. The warmth of the water is an important characteristic of this historic site.

Fritz Keller heard about the uprooting of the old vines in this location at the time. He immediately wanted to protect the genetics. Although the owners at the time had no successor, the rule was. "Achkarrers do not sell to Oberbergener"! The ancient vines could only be saved after Fritz Keller was able to prove that he had a grandmother from Achkarren.

Since 2009, the old vines in the centrepiece have been joined by a plot of black volcanic soil and a dry stone wall up to 4 metres high. This preserved piece of cultural heritage stretches over a length of 150 metres. Sélection Massale has ensured the future of this ancient vine material.

All Pinot Noirs at Weingut Franz Keller are matured in barriques. For the Erste Lage Oberbergen Bassgeige, the proportion of new wood is low at 10-20%, but even in the GG range, this rate rarely exceeds 35%. The 2021 Schlossberg from Achkarren is exactly 35%. The Pinot Noir matures in the barrels for 18 months.

Nose

The Schlossberg from Achkarren is exceptionally dark. The renowned VDP. Grosse Lage vineyard appears dark and mystical. Just like Burgundy, the grape variety has no place on the front label. Pure origin. It is full of blackcurrant, raspberry and blackberry as well as a good portion of sour cherry. Some juniper and black pepper have a subtle supporting effect. Its floral side is dark in the form of hibiscus, violets and pansies. A hint of hazelnut slowly builds up and pushes its delicate, shy herbal spice into the distance.

Palate

The Schlossberg stands above the rest. Dense, compact, yet at the same time silky cool and delicate. Its dark fruit flows into a fine stream. It creates space for the fruit with vigour. It is tightly woven, but with a clear fruit profile. Its spiciness is evident in the form of white pepper and some fennel seeds. A fine tannin accompanies it and coats the mouth. This lingers for minutes and lingers. Lasting. Dense. Long lasting. Persistent.
