Wine Description for Schlossberg Achkarren Spätburgunder GG 2022 by Franz Keller
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium cherry red with vibrant brilliance – a wine that promises elegance and freshness at first glance, without sacrificing depth.
- Nose
- Here unfolds a fascinating complexity: ripe, dark cherry fruit meets a seductive haze of smoke and roses, underpinned by nuts and a fine wood spice. The nose feels fleshy and deep, yet never overwrought – rather precise, juicy and inviting. A Spätburgunder that hints at its volcanic origins from the very first sniff.
- Palate
- On the palate, the true class of this wine reveals itself: acidity and tannin are already so harmoniously integrated that one can scarcely resist the temptation to enjoy it immediately – even though patience would be rewarded with additional dimensions. The concentration is remarkable, yet never feels forced, but rather relaxed and natural. Finely and densely woven, with a length that lingers. This is great German Spätburgunder at moderate alcohol level (12.5%), which further underscores its elegance.
- Finish
- Long, juicy and with impressive aromatic persistence. The dark fruit resonates, accompanied by fine spice notes and a mineral freshness that owes to the volcanic terroir.
- Terroir & Origin
- The legendary Achkarrer Schlossberg with its black volcanic soil (tephrite) fundamentally shapes this wine. The steep parcels are secured by up to four-metre-high dry stone walls – a vineyard that demands the highest level of manual labour and rewards with extraordinary minerality.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 20 to 30-year-old vines from sélection massale, spontaneously fermented to 1.6 grams residual sugar. The 18-month maturation in French barriques (35% new wood) lends the wine structure and spice without dominating the fruit – a textbook example of balanced oak usage.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- This Spätburgunder harmonises beautifully with pink roasted veal fillet, duck breast with cherry sauce, Coq au Vin or a mature Comté. Also an excellent choice with mushroom dishes featuring porcini or truffle.
- Special Features
- A Großes Gewächs from one of Baden’s finest vineyard sites, demonstrating how elegant and approachable German Spätburgunder can be – without heaviness, yet with impressive depth.
