Wine Description for Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Le Puits AOC 2024 by Thomas Morey

Character
Saint-Aubin belongs to those quiet discoveries of the Côte de Beaune that connoisseurs have long claimed for themselves, whilst the world still gazes towards Puligny and Chassagne. Thomas Morey, one of the most reliable interpreters of this appellation, delivers with the 1er Cru Le Puits a Chardonnay that combines precision and depth with a refreshing down-to-earth quality – a wine of clear character that needs no grand gestures to convince.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Le Puits lies in the heart of Saint-Aubin, a village that is geologically and geographically closely related to its great neighbouring communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. The soils display the typical limestone-rich subsoil of the Côte de Beaune, which lends Chardonnay that mineral tension which makes Burgundy so unmistakable. The vintage 2024 was characterised in Burgundy by changeable conditions – care in the vineyard was decisive in preserving freshness and fruit.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Chardonnay is in its element in Saint-Aubin: the grape variety finds here an expression that sits between the creamy fullness of Meursault and the cutting minerality of Puligny. Thomas Morey, who hails from one of the most renowned winemaking families of the Côte de Beaune, cultivates a craftsman-like precise, terroir-focused style. The use of oak remains deliberately restrained in order to place the natural freshness and terroir character of the wine in the foreground. At 13.0 % Vol., the wine displays a balanced, elegant structure.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine that enriches both table and kitchen alike. Classically it harmonises with grilled turbot or scallops with butter sauce. Equally convincing alongside chicken in tarragon cream sauce, risotto with white truffle or a mature Comté – dishes that bring substance without overwhelming the wine’s delicate texture.
