Wine description for Riesling „vom roten Schiefer“ 2024 1500ml Magnum by Clemens Busch

Character
Clemens Busch is among the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture on the Mosel and has shaped his estate in Pünderich into one of the region’s most significant addresses. The „vom roten Schiefer“ is his estate wine, which carries the mineral essence of the Devonian slate soils within it. With moderate 11% alcohol and subtle residual sweetness, this Riesling embodies classic Mosel styling – light-footed, precise and vibrant with energy. The magnum bottle also promises a slower, more harmonious development.
Terroir & Origin
The Mosel is the epicentre of German Riesling, and Clemens Busch manages some of Europe’s steepest vineyards. The red slate – a geological peculiarity of the lower Mosel – imparts the wines with a spicy, almost exotic minerality that clearly distinguishes itself from the blue slate of the middle Mosel. The cool river climate and the extreme hillside locations ensure lengthy ripening periods and a pronounced acid structure that gives these wines their legendary longevity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling is the undisputed noble grape variety of the Mosel, and Busch practises a non-interventionist approach. Biodynamic viticulture, hand harvesting and spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts create wines that express their origins unfiltered. The wine is aged in traditional Fuder, large old wooden casks, which give the wine time without dominating it. The result is a Riesling of crystalline clarity and authentic expression.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The combination of vibrant acidity and fine residual sweetness makes this Riesling the ideal companion to Asian cuisine – from Thai curries through Vietnamese summer rolls to sushi. It also harmonises beautifully with river trout, scallops or a goat’s cheese salad. The minerality of the red slate calls for seafood and light fish dishes, whilst the residual sweetness also balances spicier fare.
