Wine description for Riesling „from red slate“ 2023 6000ml by Clemens Busch

Character
Clemens Busch is among the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture on the Mosel and ranks internationally among Germany’s most renowned Riesling producers. This red slate Riesling embodies the mineral precision and crystalline clarity for which the estate is known. With 11% alcohol and subtle residual sweetness, this wine displays elegant lightness, combining drinkability with depth. The Imperial format of six litres underscores both the wine’s ageing potential and the significance of this vintage.
Terroir & Origin
The name says it all: red slate (Rotliegend) defines the character and identity of this Riesling. This iron-rich soil formation from the Permian period lends the wines a spicy depth and smoky minerality, distinctly different from the blue Devonian slate of other Mosel vineyard sites. Clemens Busch manages his steep slopes in Pünderich according to biodynamic principles – a philosophy centred on living soils and authentic expression of terroir. The Mosel, as Germany’s northernmost quality wine region, produces Rieslings of extraordinary finesse and acidity tension.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Red slate Riesling typically displays aromas of red fruits, herbal spice and a saline minerality. Clemens Busch works with spontaneous fermentation, extended skin contact and maturation in traditional large oak casks. This artisanal approach allows the wine to develop its terroir-driven identity unadorned. The moderate alcohol content and fine residual sweetness create a balance between tension and harmony, inviting extended bottle ageing.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The spicy minerality and vibrant acidity make this Riesling an ideal companion for Asian cuisine, particularly Thai curries or Vietnamese summer rolls. It also harmonises beautifully with smoked fish, scallops or goat’s cheese. The fine residual sweetness balances spicy dishes, whilst the minerality elegantly complements seafood and sushi.
