Wine description for Riesling Hallgarten Alte Reben 2023 1500ml Magnum by Peter Jakob Kühn

Character
Peter Jakob Kühn is among the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in the Rheingau and has shaped the estate into one of the region’s most significant addresses. This Riesling from old vines in Hallgarten embodies the house’s consistent philosophy: minimal intervention, spontaneous fermentation and uncompromising focus on terroir expression. The magnum bottle underscores the ageing potential and seriousness of this wine, which comes from own-rooted, deeply established vines.
Terroir & Origin
Hallgarten lies in the higher-altitude section of the Rheingau, where the vineyards rise to 300 metres. The quartzite and phyllite soils impart a characteristic minerality and tension to the wines. The cooler microclimate of these elevated sites ensures longer ripening periods and thus more complex aromatic structures. The old vines with their deep-reaching root systems access soil layers that remain closed to younger stocks, producing wines of particular concentration and depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Kühn works according to Demeter standards and relies on natural yeasts and extended contact with fine lees. The moderate alcohol content of 12.5% vol. and the dry orientation reflect modern Rheingau style, which places elegance above opulence. The magnum bottle favours slower, more harmonious development of the wine. Riesling from old vines typically displays more structure and complexity whilst maintaining finesse – less upfront fruit, but greater depth and persistence.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The minerality and structure of this Riesling make it ideal for freshwater fish such as pike-perch or char, as well as scallops and crustaceans. The acidity structure harmonises beautifully with asparagus in Hollandaise sauce or goat’s cheese of medium maturity. Classically also with veal sirloin or poultry in light sauce. The wine’s complexity pairs well with vegetarian dishes featuring mushrooms or root vegetables.
