Wine description for Riesling Eisquell 2025 by Battenfeld-Spanier
A Riesling that takes its name seriously: the Eisquell 2025 from Battenfeld-Spanier comes from the steep, limestone-rich vineyard sites of the Wonnegau around Hohen-Sülzen and from the Zellertal – and it tastes exactly as one would expect from these soils: cool, precise, with a saline tension that defines it from the very first sip. While the neighbouring sites on the Roter Hang develop smoky warmth on red slate, the limestone here draws a different line: slender, straightforward, unwavering.
- Colour & appearance
- Radiant golden yellow, luminous and clear in the glass.
- Nose
- An explosion of fresh aromas: mirabelle plum and apricot meet citrus, orange and grapefruit. Behind them lie intense herbal notes, a hint of ginger and a mineral depth that promises cool freshness even in the bouquet.
- Palate
- Juicy fruit, playful acidity and a fine thread of tannin – the wine moves across the tongue with energy and lightness. Its limestone origins lend it drive and coolness, while the fruit remains bright and lively.
- Finish
- Clear and cool, with lingering citrus freshness and a saline aftertaste that hints at the limestone soils of the Wonnegau.
- Terroir & origin
- The grapes come from steep slopes on limestone soils around Hohen-Sülzen and in the Zellertal – terroirs where H.O. Spanier and Carolin Kühling-Gillot craft a Riesling style of taut, cool precision. At Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott, this style reaches its celebrated peak; the Eisquell is its more accessible yet thoroughly serious ambassador.
- Grape variety & vinification
- Pure Riesling, harvested by hand and rigorously selected once more on the sorting table. Aged in large old Doppelstück casks and in stainless steel tanks, then left on the fine lees well into spring – a method that lends the young wine substance and depth without robbing it of its freshness.
- Food recommendations
- The ideal everyday wine for a cuisine shaped by vegetables and herbs: asparagus with herb vinaigrette, grilled fennel, sushi or pan-fried zander with lemon butter. It is also a brilliant choice alongside green asparagus risotto or a simple fresh goat’s cheese.
- Special features
- The estate has been farmed biodynamically since 2005, using preparations 500 and 501, spontaneous fermentation and minimal sulphur – a cellar of accompaniment rather than correction. The Eisquell, with its silver label, is the rigorous parcel selection from this environment and shows just how vibrant Rheinhessen limestone Riesling can be even in its youth.
