Wine Description for Riesling Marienburg Spätlese VDP Grosse Lage 2024 by Clemens Busch

Character
Clemens Busch ranks among the most uncompromising exponents of Mosel Riesling, and his Marienburg wines count among the absolute elite of the region. This Spätlese with just 7.5% alcohol and pronounced residual sweetness embodies the classic Mosel style: feather-light, carried by vibrant acidity and possessing that crystalline precision which can only come from the Devonian slate of the steep terraced vineyards. Busch works biodynamically and allows his wines time – the result is Rieslings of extraordinary clarity and tension.
Terroir & Origin
The Marienburg near Puenderich is one of the legendary vineyard sites of the Mosel, characterised by grey and blue Devonian slate on extremely steep hillsides. Clemens Busch manages old parcels here according to biodynamic principles, with the vines rooting deep in mineral-rich stone. The cool Mosel climate with its long growing seasons enables slow, physiologically complete ripening at moderate alcohol levels – ideal for Spätlesen that, despite their sweetness, never feel heavy, but remain infused with a racy minerality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling finds its purest expression on the Mosel, and Busch counts among those winemakers who consistently unlock the potential of this grape variety. The grapes for this Spätlese are selectively harvested, spontaneously fermented and vinified without oenological intervention. The result is a wine of authentic expressivity, holding fruit, acidity and minerality in perfect balance. The low alcohol level underscores the elegance and drinkability, whilst the residual sweetness is effortlessly integrated by the lively acidity structure.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Spätlese is more versatile than one might initially think: excellent with Asian cuisine with its balance of sweetness, spice and umami, ideal with Thai curries or sushi. Equally suited to foie gras, fruity stone fruit desserts or simply as a meditative solo wine on a summer evening.
