Wine Description for Riesling Hallgarten Alte Reben 2024 by Peter Jakob Kühn
- Colour & Appearance
- Brilliantly clear straw yellow with green reflections – a concentrated beam of light in the glass that already visually announces the freshness of the vintage.
- Nose
- Cool, precise and of impressive clarity. Vineyard peach and green pear form the fruit structure, interwoven with exotic lychee notes that lend the wine an unusual tension. Bergamot sets vibrant citrus freshness, whilst a complex herbal bouquet of parsley, chervil, lemon balm and lemongrass expands the aromatic depth. Fine accents of white pepper and yellow flowers round off the multifaceted aroma profile.
- Palate
- Here the full personality of old vines reveals itself: gripping, compact, with a distinctive, racy acidity that comes forward frontal and demanding. The intense yellow fruit catches this energy smoothly and creates that balance which characterises classic Rheingau Riesling. Vineyard peach, green pear and lychee meet a stony, cool minerality, whilst fresh herbal notes underline the elegance. Astringent, invigorating – a wine that prioritises structure over flattery.
- Finish
- Long, fresh and pointed. The acidity carries far without dominating, supported by bright fruit and fine herbal spice. Elegance rather than weight – a clear statement.
- Terroir & Origin
- A vineyard site cuvée from Hallgarten’s finest vineyards between 180 and 350 metres altitude: Hendelberg, Jungfer, Schönhell and Würzgarten – all sites with Grand Cru potential. The soils of phyllite slate and quartz veins lend the wine its mineral precision and cool elegance.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling from old vines. Whole bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, ten months ageing on full lees in large wooden casks and stainless steel tanks. Bottled end of August 2025 – a classic, uncompromising artisanal vinification.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The racy acidity and mineral structure demand clear flavours: pan-fried char, scallops with herb butter, pike-perch on fennel vegetables or asparagus with Hollandaise sauce. Also brilliant with goat’s cheese or Asian dishes with lemongrass.
- Special Characteristics
- A Riesling that combines the power of old vines with Rheingau classicism – without compromise, without artifice. Peter Jakob Kühn delivers here a wine that rewards patience and will gain further complexity in the years to come.
