Wine Description for Riesling Hallgarten Alte Reben 2024 by Peter Jakob Kühn
- Colour & Appearance
- Clear, concentrated straw yellow with lively green reflexes – a wine that already tells of precision and energy in the glass.
- Nose
- Cool, fine and of striking clarity. At the centre stand vineyard peach and green pear, complemented by a seductive hint of lychee, which lends the wine an unexpected, elegant exoticism. Bergamot zest brings vibrant citrus into play, whilst a herb-driven core of parsley, chervil and lemongrass drives complexity into the depths. Subtle accents of allspice and white pepper add a fine, bright spiciness.
- Palate
- Compact and gripping on entry – the racy acidity comes forward frontal and energetically, yet is sovereignly caught by intense yellow fruit. This creates a tension-filled balance that simultaneously animates and soothes. Vineyard peach, green pear and a hint of lychee play into a bright, elegant spectrum, carried by a slightly stony, cool minerality that unmistakably points to the phylite slate of the Hallgarten vineyard sites.
- Finish
- Fresh, clear and pointed – the finish lives from elegance rather than weight. Herbal spice and citrus fruit linger long, without ever becoming tiring.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from a vineyard site cuvée around Hallgarten in the Rheingau, situated at 180 to 350 metres elevation. The subsoil of phylite slate and quartz-laced soils shapes the cool minerality and nervous tension of the wine. The individual vineyard sites – including Hendelberg, Jungfer, Schönhell and Würzgarten – rank among the most renowned addresses of the Rheingau.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Riesling from old vines, gently processed as whole bunch pressing. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with natural yeasts; maturation lasts ten months on the full lees, partly in large wooden cask, partly in stainless steel tank. Bottling only at the end of August of the following year – a wine that has been allowed its rest. Alcohol: 11.5% vol.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Ideal with pan-fried trout with herb butter, pike-perch on Riesling foam or a asparagus salad with vinaigrette. Also an excellent choice with Asian dishes with lemongrass or a goat’s cheese tart.
- Special Features
- A wine that captures the philosophy of Peter Jakob Kühn perfectly: minimal intervention, maximum expression of terroir. The cuvée from vineyard sites worthy of GG status shows that Hallgarten ranks among the most exciting Riesling addresses of the Rheingau – and that old vines on slate soil deliver a precision that is scarcely to be surpassed.
