Wine Description for Planetes de Nin 2018 by Familia Nin Ortiz
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous cherry red in the glass, which underscores the youthfulness of this Priorat wine whilst simultaneously announcing its elegant character.
- Nose
- Dark, complex and remarkably fresh – a Priorat of the finest kind. Youthful yeast notes combine with precise fruit. Behind this unfolds a fascinating aromatic spectrum: cherries along with their bitter stones, iron and blood, ink and black tea, dark chocolate, black slate, juniper and sloe. The mineral signature of the iron-rich Llicorella soils runs through the entire bouquet.
- Palate
- The dark minerality of the Llicorella slate dominates the palate, yet what captivates is the almost playful lightness. The typical Priorat power is certainly present, but takes a back seat to the precision of freshness. Aromas between cherry and garrigue, between ripe fruit and the grittiness of grape pips dance elegantly across the tongue. The tannin displays fine to medium grain and accompanies the wine harmoniously.
- Finish
- Long and precise, with persistent minerality and fine tannin structure. Much is already in its rightful place here – a few years of bottle age will perfect this balance further.
- Terroir & Origin
- From the Finca les Planetes opposite Porrera, facing east. The vines, between 10 and over 80 years old, are rooted in different Llicorella slate formations with varying proportions of iron, silica and black clay – a mosaic that is reflected in the wine.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Garnacha Negra, Cariñena and some Garnacha Peluda. 40% whole bunches, 60% destemmed but uncrushed, 15 days fermentation in 3,000-litre oak vats with natural yeasts. Subsequently 20 months ageing in large wood – a vinification that masterfully balances freshness and complexity.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Smoked courgettes with caramelised pine nuts and warm yoghurt, fazzoletti with tuna sauce and rabbit ragout or tuna steak with soy-balsamic jus.
- Special Features
- A Priorat that breaks with convention: power meets finesse, density meets freshness. The consistent work of Carles Ortiz demonstrates that this legendary region can also be elegant.
