Wine Description for Riesling Jungfer Grosses Gewächs 2021 by Peter Jakob Kühn
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium straw yellow with brilliant clarity – a wine that hints at its origins even visually.
- Nose
- Fascinatingly multi-layered: citrus freshness meets mineral complexity. Smoke and tobacco lend the bouquet an unexpected depth, whilst crushed slate and white flowers underscore the cool elegance of the vineyard site. A nose that invites lingering.
- Palate
- Here the true greatness of this wine reveals itself: deep, juicy, energetic. The mineral character imparted by quartzite and loess loam manifests itself in striking stone and saline notes. Lemon zest and stone fruit provide the fruity counterpoints. The paradox succeeds effortlessly: creamy texture meets taut acidity architecture, silkiness meets firm extract. A wine of impressive precision and juiciness.
- Finish
- Long, persistent, mineral – the echo of a great Riesling that recalls its origins even minutes later.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Hallgartener Jungfer sits at 220 metres elevation, directly above the legendary Doossberg. The gentle south-easterly slope ensures cooler temperatures, whilst the erosion material from the Rheingau Mountains with its high quartzite content and loess loam provides that mineral tension which defines this wine.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling, farmed biodynamically. Maturation takes place in Stockinger wooden casks – always the same one for the Jungfer, whereby the wood influence remains subtle and the terroir comes through unadulterated. Peter Jakob Kühn works with minimal intervention, maximum precision.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- The mineral structure and vibrant acidity make this Riesling ideal for demanding pairings: grilled amberjack in a yellow tomato, ginger and fermented garlic broth, scallops fermented in lemon shiro koji or tandoori cauliflower with ginger and shiro miso. The fermentation notes harmonise brilliantly with the wine’s complexity.
- Special Characteristics
- A Grosses Gewächs that bears the hallmark of one of Germany’s most consistent biodynamic producers. At 12% alcohol and in a dry style, a Riesling of classical elegance and modern drinkability in equal measure.
