Wine Description for Riesling Jungfer Grosses Gewächs 2022 by Peter Jakob Kühn
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium straw yellow with brilliant clarity – a wine that promises elegance and precision from the very first glance.
- Nose
- A fascinating aromatic profile that hovers between heaven and earth: meadow flowers and smoke meet earthy notes, must apple and hay alternate with fennel, anise and almonds. Ripe peaches and a hint of crushed slate complete the picture – complex, multi-layered, captivating.
- Palate
- Pure, weightless elegance meets mineralic grounding. The wine flows smoothly across the palate, delicate and ethereal, yet full of energy and fine spice. The balance between lime and lemon on one hand and subtle sweetness on the other is masterful. Salt and stone lend structure and depth – a Riesling of remarkable finesse.
- Finish
- Long, precise and vibrant. The mineralic freshness carries far, the delicate fruit notes linger without ever becoming intrusive. A finale that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Hallgartener Jungfer sits at around 220 metres elevation, directly above the Doosberg. The soil consists of weathered material from the Rheingau mountains with a high quartzite content, mixed with loess loam. The gentle south-east facing slope provides cooler exposure than the Doosberg – ideal conditions for a Riesling with tension and elegance.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Riesling, cultivated biodynamically. Maturation took place in a Stockinger wooden barrel, which houses the same wine year after year – the wood influence is barely perceptible, instead pure fruit and terroir dominate. At just 11.5% alcohol, a textbook example of finesse over power.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- This Riesling demands sophisticated cuisine: scallops with fennel foam, turbot in herb butter, calf’s sweetbreads with morels or smoked trout. Also an excellent choice with goat’s cheese or aged Comté.
- Special Features
- An outstanding Grosses Gewächs that perfectly embodies Peter Jakob Kühn’s philosophy of lightness and precision. A wine that proves that greatness does not come from alcohol and extract, but from clarity and expression.
