Wine Description for Riesling Karthäuserhof Grosses Gewächs 2023 from Karthäuserhof

Colour & Appearance
Luminous golden yellow with greenish reflections – a Riesling that reveals its cool-climate origins right there in the glass.
Nose
Here unfolds the full elegance of the Mosel: grapefruit, bergamot and bitter orange meet white peach and Nashi pear. Add to this a multi-layered herb garden of lemon balm, chervil and lemon thyme. What distinguishes this wine: the unmistakable stony character of bare slate rock, which works subtly and promisingly at once – youthfully charming, yet with dark minerality in the background.
Palate
Straightforward, powerful, precise. The 8.5 g/l acidity is perfectly integrated, never aggressive, but supporting like a steel cable. With only 0.5 g/l residual sugar, this is an uncompromisingly dry Riesling – „bone dry“, as the winemakers would say. The stony-saline character presents itself lean and sinewy, the fruit clinging closely to the acid structure. Fine astringency and positive bitter compounds give the wine definition and tension.
Finish
Long, ethereal, brightening. The aftertaste combines fresh fruit with fine bitter notes and an invigorating breeze that energises the palate and invites the next sip. Impressive length.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from the Kronenberg parcel, a historic vineyard site in the Karthäuserhofberg with 100-year-old vines. The spectacular side valley of the Ruwer offers a cooler climate and bare slate – ideal conditions for racy, long-lived Rieslings.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Classic whole-bunch pressing, slow fermentation in wooden cask in the traditional cellar. The wine aged 16 months on full lees – through two complete winters. This maturation period imparts additional complexity and texture to the wine.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Oysters, scallops, monkfish or turbot with herb butter. Also an excellent choice with goat’s cheese, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce or Asian cuisine featuring coriander and ginger.
Special Characteristics
A Riesling for the ages: at moderate 12% alcohol and extreme acidity structure, this wine will age for decades. An exemplar of uncompromisingly dry Mosel Riesling – lean, precise, electrifying.
