Wine Description for Pascena Moscadello di Montalcino DOC Vendemmia Tardiva 2018 375ml by Col d’Orcia
- Character
- The Pascena from Col d’Orcia is a rare testament to an almost forgotten winemaking tradition of Montalcino. As a Vendemmia Tardiva – late harvest – it unites natural sweetness with the unmistakable freshness and vibrancy of Moscadello. With 12.5% alcohol and a pronounced yet not overwhelming residual sweetness (four out of five levels), it remains elegant and well-balanced – a dessert wine that seduces without tiring.
- Terroir & Origin
- Montalcino, known above all as the home of the great Brunello, harbours on its galestro– and alberese-rich soils the ideal conditions for aromatic white wines. The continental climate with Mediterranean influences, the elevation and the long, sun-drenched autumns create the conditions under which late-harvested grapes can develop natural concentration and aromatic depth. Col d’Orcia, one of the region’s most renowned estates, manages its vineyard sites with a clear commitment to organic viticulture and the preservation of local heritage.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- The Moscadello di Montalcino is a local variant of Muscat (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains), which was already cultivated in this region during the Middle Ages and fell into obscurity for a long time. Col d’Orcia has dedicated itself to the revival of this indigenous variety. For the Vendemmia Tardiva, the grapes are deliberately harvested late to achieve maximum ripeness, natural sugar concentration and the characteristic floral-musky aromatics. The vinification aims at preserving this natural varietal expression. The handy 375 ml bottle underscores the character of this wine as a refined moment of enjoyment.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Pascena is an ideal companion to Cantucci and Vin Santo, to almond biscuits and Cantuccini of Tuscan tradition. It also harmonises beautifully with Panna Cotta, Pannacotta with berries, Crème brûlée or a simple peach dessert. The contrast with spicy blue cheese or Gorgonzola can also be delightful – a classic interplay of sweetness and saltiness.
