Wine Description for Pascena Moscadello di Montalcino DOC Vendemmia Tardiva 2018 375ml by Col d’Orcia
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous straw yellow with golden reflections – a wine that already announces its concentrated nature in the glass.
- Nose
- Seductive and complex: ripe pears and quinces meet apricots, peaches and a piquant note of grapefruit and kumquat. These are joined by delicate elderflower, a hint of botrytis and fine puff pastry nuances – an aromatic feast that unites elegance and opulence.
- Palate
- Powerful and opulent, the Pascena unfolds on the palate. The Muscat typicity reveals itself distinctly with floral notes of roses and musk, which harmonise with rich, concentrated fruit. Remarkable is the balance: despite 117 g/l residual sugar, the wine never feels heavy-handed, but rather displays depth, density and a refreshing acidity of 5.2 g/l, which lends structure and length.
- Finish
- Long and nuanced, the fruit combines with honey, vanilla, candied orange and biscuit – a finale full of grace and persistence.
- Terroir & Origin
- The white Muscat grows on the Sant’Angelo hill in Montalcino with ideal south-south-west exposure. This privileged location lends the wine its characteristic concentration and aromatic depth.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- The grapes undergo a traditional appassimento on the vine – selective hand-harvesting in multiple passes ensures optimal drying. After gentle pressing, slow fermentation takes place at controlled 16°C in stainless steel tanks, which is halted by cooling at 12.5% alcohol. Ageing in stainless steel preserves primary fruit and freshness. Bottled in February 2023.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- A versatile dessert wine to accompany blue cheese such as Gorgonzola or Roquefort, Foie Gras, apricot tart, Panna Cotta with berry compote or Cantuccini. Also a rewarding experience enjoyed solo as a meditative pleasure.
- Special Features
- Moscadello has deep historical roots reaching back to the Renaissance. This Vendemmia Tardiva is a rare example of the rediscovery of a Tuscan sweet wine tradition that places elegance above mere sweetness – a wine with soul and history.
