The Pannobile Red embodies the collective vision of a group of ambitious winemakers at Lake Neusiedl who have established their own quality standard with this cuvée since 1994. Anita and Hans Nittnaus interpret this aspiration with their characteristic signature: precise, terroir-focused and without unnecessary frills. The 2022 vintage presents itself with a moderate 13.5% alcohol content, pleasingly approachable – a wine that combines substance with elegance and reflects the Burgundian philosophy that many Pannobile winemakers pursue.

Terroir & Origin

The Burgenland at Lake Neusiedl benefits from a unique Pannonian microclimate: hot, dry summers meet the cooling effect of the shallow steppe lake. The calcareous soils with gravel and loam deposits shape the structure of the wines. At Nittnaus in Gols, old vines and sustainable viticulture play a central role. The winery has been working according to organic principles for years, allowing the vines time to develop deep roots – a prerequisite for wines with depth and authenticity.

Grape Variety & Vinification

Blaufränkisch, the great red grape variety of Burgenland, forms the backbone of this cuvée and is complemented by Zweigelt. Blaufränkisch brings structure, spice and ageing potential, whilst Zweigelt contributes fruit and approachability. The Pannobile statutes prescribe strict quality criteria: hand-harvesting, moderate yields and traditional maturation in large wooden casks or used barriques. The result is wines that speak of their origin, rather than being overshadowed by wood or technique.

A versatile companion to Austrian cuisine: Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz or Zwiebelrostbraten find their ideal partner here. The wine also harmonises beautifully with braised beef, lamb dishes and mature cheese.
